Medical Billing
and Coding
|
Medical Billing & Coding is the process of
submitting and following up on claims to insurance
companies in order to receive payment for services
rendered by a healthcare provider.
The
same process is used for most insurance companies,
whether they are private companies or
government-owned. Medical billers are encouraged,
but not required by law to become certified by
taking an exam such as the CMRS Exam, RHIA Exam and
others.
Certification schools are intended to provide a
theoretical grounding for students entering the
medical billing field. |

Medical Coding Classes
To ensure you get the best medical billing job
possible, it is important to enroll in medical
coding classes. Employers will pay well-educated
coders higher and it will also open up more job
opportunities. A coding class usually only lasts 6
months, although that varies depending on the
institution. |
Medical Billing and Coding Programs
Medical billing schools provide their students with
the everyday tools needed to be an effective medical
billing specialist. They will receive training in
how to maintain patient records through a coding
system called ICD-9 index. The medical billing
courses will not only revolve around the coding
system, but students will be taught basic anatomy
and physiology, medical terminology, as well as be
equipped with knowledge of insurance claim
procedures so that they will be able to file
insurance claims. In addition to these basic
classes, there are usually more advanced medical
coding classes involving medical office
administration and technology. These classes will
teach students leadership skills so that they can
keep a medical billing office organized and running
efficiently, and also help students learn the
different medical office equipment and software that
is involved with the job. Most programs will offer
these courses of study as well:
Billing Management
Medical Documentation
Electronic Data Interchange and Modifiers
Health Insurance Claims
After completing these courses, there are many
opportunities for great employment after graduation.
Some of the jobs include becoming a medical billing
specialist, coding specialist or general clerk.
Usually entry level coders eventually work as
consultants or begin their own billing company. |
Medical Billing and Coding Salary
Through medical billing & coding training, students
can find this career path to be quite lucrative.
With the correct medical billing training program at
the right medical coding schools, students can
usually make between $35,000 and $45,000 a year. The
salary of a medical billing coding specialist can
vary depending on the workplace (i.e. private
practice, hospital, etc) but, generally, the salary
will not waver. Another reason why salaries may
differ is the amount of experience a candidate
brings to the establishment, both in terms of time
spent in the medical coding and billing field as
well as the number of specialties studied. |
Medical Billing Certification
By attaining
medical billing certification, medical coders can
earn more and apply for better jobs in the health
industry. Certification requires the successful
completion of a standardized test. Most jobs in the
medical billing field require certification. Classes
covering certification can take anywhere between six
months to two years to complete.
